Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chuchuhuasi (Maytenus krukovii or Maytenus laevis) is a large tree native to the Amazon rainforest, and its bark has been used traditionally by indigenous peoples in the region for a range of medicinal purposes. Among its many traditional uses, Chuchuhuasi is known to be employed as a tonic for "strengthening the body," improving stamina, and supporting musculoskeletal health. In particular, it has been used in folk medicine to address rheumatism, arthritis, and muscle pains, which suggests a belief in its effects on muscle tone or musculoskeletal function. The bark is typically prepared as a decoction or infused in alcohol and consumed to "invigorate" the body or as a remedy for physical weakness or muscle aches. However, while this traditional use is well documented anecdotally and in ethnobotanical surveys, there is a lack of robust scientific research specifically validating Chuchuhuasi’s efficacy in treating or improving lack of muscle tone (hypotonia) or related conditions. Some preliminary studies and anecdotal reports cite its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which may indirectly benefit musculoskeletal health, but clinical trials and pharmacological studies directly addressing muscle tone are absent. Therefore, while tradition supports its use for muscle-related complaints, scientific evidence remains limited.
