Evidence supporting the use of: Cissus quadrangularis
For the health condition: Muscle Tone (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cissus quadrangularis has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for bone health and healing fractures, but recent scientific research has begun to explore its effects on muscle and body composition. Several studies have investigated its potential to support muscle tone and reduce muscle wasting. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition (2007) found that supplementation with Cissus quadrangularis extract led to a significant reduction in body fat and improvement in lean muscle mass among overweight and obese participants. The proposed mechanisms include its ability to modulate cortisol levels, support anabolic processes, and provide antioxidant effects, which may help in preserving or improving muscle tone, particularly in individuals with muscle wasting due to stress, aging, or metabolic conditions.
However, while these studies are promising, the evidence base is still limited and primarily involves small sample sizes or populations with specific metabolic conditions. There are a lack of large, well-controlled clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy in improving muscle tone specifically in those suffering from sarcopenia or muscle atrophy due to inactivity or illness. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation for its use in supporting muscle tone, the strength of the evidence is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 on the evidence scale.
