Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Eurycoma longifolia (commonly known as Tongkat Ali) has gained attention for its potential effects on muscle strength and muscle mass. Scientific studies, though limited and generally small-scale, suggest that supplementation with Eurycoma longifolia extract may help increase muscle strength and improve body composition, particularly in men. The proposed mechanisms include its influence on testosterone production and its possible anti-estrogenic effects, both of which could theoretically contribute to improved muscle tone and physical performance.

A few randomized controlled trials have demonstrated modest increases in muscle strength, lean body mass, and reduced body fat in men taking Eurycoma longifolia extract, especially in the context of resistance training. For example, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2003) reported increased muscle strength and size in men who supplemented with Eurycoma longifolia during a 5-week strength training program. Another study in older adults showed improved muscle strength and increased free testosterone levels.

However, the totality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and a lack of large-scale, high-quality trials. The effect sizes observed are generally modest, and the studies often focus on healthy men rather than those with clinically significant muscle atrophy or sarcopenia. Therefore, while there is some scientific support for Eurycoma longifolia’s use in promoting muscle tone, the current evidence base is insufficient for strong recommendations.
