Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustilide is a major bioactive component of Angelica sinensis (“Dong Quai”), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Historically, Angelica sinensis and its constituents have been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to address conditions such as menstrual irregularities, pain, and conditions described as “blood deficiency,” which sometimes included symptoms of muscle weakness or poor muscle tone. Traditional literature and TCM formulations occasionally attribute a tonifying effect to Angelica sinensis, suggesting it may help strengthen or invigorate the body, but these claims are not specific or well-defined in terms of modern muscle physiology.

There is little direct scientific evidence supporting the use of ligustilide specifically for improving muscle tone or treating muscle weakness. Some preclinical studies suggest that ligustilide has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, and may help with muscle pain in animal models, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies directly linking ligustilide with improved muscle tone in humans. The traditional use is therefore not strongly supported by modern scientific evidence, and its historical application to “muscle tone” is inferred rather than explicit.

In summary, the use of ligustilide to support or treat lack of muscle tone is rooted in traditional herbal practice, with very limited direct evidence from modern scientific research.
