Ostarine (also known as MK-2866 or Enobosarm) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been researched for its ability to increase muscle mass and improve muscle function, particularly in individuals with muscle wasting conditions. Several clinical studies have investigated Ostarine’s efficacy in treating muscle wasting (cachexia) associated with diseases like cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or age-related sarcopenia.

Randomized, placebo-controlled trials have shown that Ostarine can lead to statistically significant increases in lean body mass and improvements in physical function compared to placebo. For example, a phase II clinical trial published in 2011 (Dalton et al., J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle) demonstrated that Ostarine increased lean body mass and improved stair-climbing power in older adults without severe adverse effects.

Despite these promising results, Ostarine is not approved by the FDA or similar regulatory bodies for the treatment of muscle wasting or lack of muscle tone. Its use is largely experimental and limited to clinical trials. The evidence base is moderate: while there are positive results from controlled studies, larger and longer-term trials are needed to confirm safety and efficacy. Moreover, Ostarine is prohibited in competitive sports due to its performance-enhancing potential.

In summary, there is scientific evidence suggesting that Ostarine can support or treat lack of muscle tone, but its use remains investigational and is not part of standard medical practice as of 2024.
