Evidence supporting the use of: Phosphcreatine
For the health condition: Muscle Tone (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phosphocreatine (also known as creatine phosphate) plays a well-established role in muscle energy metabolism. It rapidly donates a phosphate group to ADP to regenerate ATP, the primary energy currency in muscle contraction. This function is critical in situations of high energy demand, such as intense or short-duration muscular activity. Supplementation with creatine (which increases muscle phosphocreatine stores) is scientifically validated for improving muscle strength, power, and performance in both healthy individuals and some clinical populations, such as patients with neuromuscular disorders or muscle wasting conditions.
However, the evidence specifically supporting phosphocreatine supplementation to directly treat or support muscle tone (defined as the continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles, or the muscle's resistance to passive stretch during resting state) is limited. Most studies focus on strength, power, and muscle mass, rather than baseline muscle tone. Some clinical trials suggest potential benefits for muscle function in certain diseases (e.g., muscular dystrophy, ALS), but consistent improvement in muscle tone itself has not been robustly demonstrated. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanism and some supporting evidence for muscle function improvement, the direct evidence for improving “muscle tone” per se is modest. The overall strength of evidence for using phosphocreatine/creatine to specifically address lack of muscle tone is therefore rated as low to moderate (2 out of 5).
