Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Potato protein is a plant-based protein source that has gained attention in recent years for its high essential amino acid content and digestibility. While there is scientific inquiry into its nutritional qualities, evidence directly supporting its use for improving or treating lack of muscle tone (hypotonia) is limited. Potato protein is considered a high-quality protein, with studies indicating a favorable amino acid profile, particularly rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) that are important for muscle synthesis (Bollati et al., 2018). Some research suggests that plant-based proteins, including potato protein, can stimulate muscle protein synthesis when consumed in adequate quantities, similar to animal proteins (Pinckaers et al., 2019). However, most studies focus on general muscle maintenance or growth in healthy adults or athletes rather than treating clinical conditions like muscle hypotonia.

There is a lack of clinical trial data specifically demonstrating that potato protein can meaningfully improve muscle tone in individuals with deficiencies. Current use is based more on extrapolation from general protein and amino acid research than on direct evidence. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for using high-quality proteins to support muscle health, the specific use of potato protein for this purpose is only modestly supported by scientific evidence.
