Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Rice protein is a plant-based protein source often used as an alternative to animal-derived proteins. Scientific studies have investigated its effects on muscle mass, recovery, and muscle tone, particularly in comparison to whey protein. Research indicates that rice protein is effective in supporting muscle protein synthesis when consumed after resistance exercise. For example, a randomized, double-blind study published in the journal Nutrition Journal (Joy et al., 2013) compared rice protein isolate to whey protein and found no significant differences in muscle thickness, strength, or body composition improvements after 8 weeks of resistance training in healthy males. The amino acid profile of rice protein, while slightly lower in lysine compared to animal proteins, is sufficient to support muscle repair and growth when consumed in adequate amounts as part of a balanced diet.

However, the overall body of evidence is more limited compared to extensively studied proteins like whey. Most studies suggest rice protein can help maintain or improve muscle tone in populations engaging in resistance training, especially for those who are vegetarian, vegan, or lactose intolerant. Although evidence is promising, it is not as robust or plentiful as for animal-based proteins, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
