Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, particularly as a general health tonic, aphrodisiac, and to support physical strength and stamina. In traditional systems, it is often included in formulations intended to improve muscle strength, physical performance, and recovery, which may be interpreted as supporting muscle tone. The root is considered a "Rasayana" (rejuvenator) and "Balya" (strengthening) herb in Ayurveda. This historical usage forms the basis for its association with muscle tone or muscular weakness.

However, direct scientific evidence specifically assessing Safed musli for the treatment or support of "muscle tone" (i.e., the amount of tension or resistance to movement in muscles) is limited. Most modern research focuses on its effects on sexual health, testosterone levels, and general physical endurance, with some animal studies indicating anabolic or adaptogenic properties. These properties could theoretically contribute to improved muscle mass or strength, but clinical trials explicitly targeting muscle tone in humans are lacking. Therefore, while traditional usage supports its application in conditions related to muscle strength or weakness, scientific validation for this specific use remains weak.
