Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Teasel (most commonly referring to Dipsacus fullonum or Dipsacus asper) has been used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Chinese practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), teasel root (Dipsaci radix) is known as Xu Duan and is employed to "tonify the liver and kidneys," strengthen bones and sinews, and promote recovery from injuries or musculoskeletal weakness. Some TCM sources describe its use for conditions involving weak or lax muscles, such as poor muscle tone or musculoskeletal weakness, often in the context of recovery from trauma or chronic weakness. However, these uses are based on traditional energetic concepts rather than modern physiological understanding.

There is very limited scientific research that investigates teasel for improving or supporting muscle tone specifically. The available studies focus largely on other applications, such as potential anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, or bone-healing properties, and do not provide direct evidence for its efficacy in treating hypotonia (lack of muscle tone). As a result, while teasel has a history of traditional use for musculoskeletal complaints, the evidence supporting its use for muscle tone is weak and not substantiated by clinical research. Thus, the justification for its use in this context is primarily traditional, with minimal supporting evidence.
