Evidence supporting the use of: Turkesterone
For the health condition: Muscle Tone (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Turkesterone is a phytoecdysteroid found in plants such as Ajuga turkestanica, and it has gained popularity as a supplement purported to support muscle growth and improve muscle tone. The use of turkesterone for muscle-related purposes is justified primarily by preliminary scientific evidence, rather than traditional medicinal practices.
Some animal studies and limited in vitro research suggest that turkesterone and other ecdysteroids may have anabolic effects, potentially enhancing protein synthesis and muscle mass. For example, a few rodent studies have reported increases in muscle growth and physical performance following administration of ecdysteroids. However, these results have not been robustly replicated in human trials, and the mechanisms remain unclear. Human data specifically evaluating turkesterone's impact on muscle tone or muscle mass are virtually nonexistent as of 2024. Most available evidence stems from animal models or extrapolations from related compounds.
Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for interest in turkesterone's potential muscle-supporting effects, the strength of the evidence is very low. The current state of research does not robustly validate its use in improving muscle tone in humans, and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to establish efficacy and safety.
