Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is an intermediate compound in the Krebs (citric acid) cycle, which is essential for cellular energy production. Its use in supporting the muscular system is primarily based on its role in metabolism and amino acid synthesis. Some scientific studies have investigated AKG supplementation, particularly in the context of exercise performance, muscle protein synthesis, and recovery.

Research shows that AKG can decrease muscle protein breakdown and may improve nitrogen balance, especially in catabolic states (such as critical illness or after surgery). A few small studies in athletes suggest that AKG, often as part of an arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) supplement, may increase muscle strength or endurance, but results are inconsistent and sometimes confounded by the presence of other ingredients. There is limited evidence from animal and in vitro studies indicating AKG may reduce muscle wasting and support muscle metabolism.

Overall, while AKG has a plausible biochemical rationale and some preliminary human data, robust clinical trials in healthy individuals or athletes are lacking. The quality and size of available studies do not provide strong support for its efficacy in enhancing muscle function or muscle mass in the general population. Therefore, the use of AKG for supporting the muscles body system is justified by some scientific evidence but is not strongly validated.
