Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) is a compound commonly marketed in sports supplements for its purported ability to support muscle growth, strength, and exercise performance. The rationale behind its use is that arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that may promote vasodilation and thereby potentially increase blood flow to muscles during exercise. Alpha-ketoglutarate is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle and is thought to aid in amino acid synthesis and energy production. However, scientific evidence supporting AAKG’s efficacy in enhancing muscle performance or growth is limited.
Several small studies have investigated the effects of AAKG supplementation on strength, endurance, and muscle mass. A 2012 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found no significant improvements in strength, endurance, or body composition in resistance-trained and untrained men after AAKG supplementation compared to placebo. Reviews of the literature consistently conclude that while arginine supplementation can increase plasma arginine levels and may have modest effects on blood flow, this does not consistently translate to measurable benefits in muscle performance or hypertrophy in healthy adults.
In summary, while the use of AAKG is grounded in scientific rationale and there is some research interest, the overall quality and consistency of evidence supporting its use for muscle support is weak. The current scientific consensus is that AAKG does not provide reliable or significant benefits for muscle strength or growth in most populations.
