Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis) is an herb traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the musculoskeletal system. In TCM, Ba Ji Tian is regarded as a tonic for the kidneys and is believed to strengthen bones and muscles, particularly when there is weakness, soreness, or stiffness in the lower back and knees. These traditional uses are based on the TCM theory that the kidneys "govern the bones" and that kidney tonics can help fortify the body's structure and movement. Ba Ji Tian is commonly included in herbal formulas for musculoskeletal complaints, such as arthralgia and muscle weakness.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these effects is limited. Some animal studies have suggested that extracts of Morinda officinalis may have anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoporotic effects, potentially aiding in bone health, but rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is insufficient high-quality research to definitively validate its efficacy for muscle strength or musculoskeletal support in humans. Therefore, while Ba Ji Tian continues to be used in traditional practice for muscle and bone health, this use is not strongly backed by modern scientific evidence.
