Evidence supporting the use of: Camphor oil
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Camphor oil has a long history of traditional use for musculoskeletal complaints, especially in topical formulations intended to relieve muscle aches, stiffness, and minor pain. In traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, camphor is applied externally as a liniment or balm to soothe muscle discomfort and improve circulation. Its characteristic cooling sensation is thought to provide symptomatic relief by distracting from underlying pain (a counterirritant effect). Modern over-the-counter products, such as muscle rubs and ointments, often include camphor as an active ingredient for these purposes.
While there is strong traditional support for the use of camphor oil in managing muscle discomfort, the scientific evidence is limited. Some small studies and reviews suggest that camphor, when used topically, can provide mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects through its action on nerve endings and by increasing local blood flow. However, high-quality clinical trials are lacking, and most evidence is extrapolated from its widespread traditional use and physiological plausibility as a counterirritant. Thus, camphor oil’s role in supporting the muscle body system is justified primarily by tradition, with limited scientific validation.
