Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a fatty acid found naturally in meat and dairy products. It has been marketed as a supplement purported to aid in muscle growth and body composition, particularly by reducing body fat and potentially increasing lean muscle mass. The scientific evidence for CLA’s efficacy in supporting the muscle system is mixed and generally modest. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated CLA supplementation in humans. Some studies suggest a small reduction in body fat, but effects on muscle mass are inconsistent and often not statistically significant. The magnitude of any observed effects tends to be minor and may not be clinically meaningful.

The proposed mechanisms by which CLA could affect muscle and fat tissue include modulation of lipid metabolism and enhancement of energy expenditure. However, the exact pathways remain unclear, and some studies have reported adverse effects such as increased oxidative stress or insulin resistance with CLA supplementation. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some research supporting the use of CLA for body composition, the quality and consistency of evidence are low. Leading authorities, such as the International Society of Sports Nutrition, conclude that CLA has minimal effects on muscle growth in healthy adults. Therefore, the use of CLA for supporting the muscles body system receives only a modest evidence rating.
