Dipsacus, commonly known as teasel, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, particularly Dipsacus asper and Dipsacus fullonum. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Dipsacus root ("Xu Duan") is believed to "tonify the liver and kidneys," "strengthen bones and muscles," and "promote the healing of tendons and bones." It has been used for centuries in formulas intended to address musculoskeletal complaints such as lower back pain, joint weakness, and trauma-related injuries. The herb is often prescribed after bone fractures or muscle injuries to hasten recovery and restore strength.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Dipsacus for muscle health is limited. Most modern research has focused on its potential anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and bone-healing properties, with some animal studies suggesting it may influence osteogenesis and tissue repair. Clinical trials in humans are sparse and have generally not focused on direct muscle support but rather on bone or joint health. Thus, while Dipsacus is widely used traditionally to support musculoskeletal health, including muscles, robust scientific validation for this specific claim is lacking.
