Ecdysteroids are a class of steroid hormones naturally found in plants (phytoecdysteroids) and insects. The most well-known ecdysteroid, 20-hydroxyecdysone, has attracted attention as a novel supplement for supporting muscle growth and performance. Scientific interest in ecdysteroids stems from animal and limited human studies suggesting anabolic effects without the androgenic side-effects associated with traditional anabolic steroids.

Preclinical studies in rodents have shown that ecdysteroids can stimulate protein synthesis in muscle tissues, potentially leading to increased muscle mass and strength. For example, a 2019 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial (Isenmann et al., Archives of Toxicology) reported that supplementation with ecdysterone (a type of ecdysteroid) over 10 weeks led to a greater increase in muscle mass and strength compared with placebo in resistance-trained men. However, the sample size was small, and the study has limitations regarding blinding and generalizability.

Overall, while there is emerging scientific evidence—particularly from animal studies and a small number of human trials—supporting the use of ecdysteroids for muscle health, the evidence base remains limited and not yet robust. More large-scale, well-controlled human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. For these reasons, the evidence level is rated as 2, reflecting preliminary but not definitive scientific support.
