Elk antler, often referred to as "velvet antler," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. It has traditionally been consumed to support muscle strength, vitality, and recovery, especially in athletes and the elderly. This use is based largely on the concept that substances which grow rapidly in nature (such as the soft, growing antlers of deer and elk) can impart regenerative or strengthening properties to those who consume them. Historical texts describe its application in treating "deficiency" syndromes, including weakness and muscle wasting. However, while there are a few modern studies—mostly from China and Korea—suggesting possible benefits to muscle strength, endurance, and recovery, these studies tend to be small, of limited quality, and often not replicated or peer-reviewed in major Western scientific journals. The most frequently cited components of elk antler velvet are growth factors like IGF-1, amino acids, and minerals, but there is little robust evidence that oral supplementation significantly affects the muscles of healthy adults. Most claims remain unsubstantiated by large-scale, high-quality clinical trials. In summary, elk antler is used traditionally for muscle support, and there is some preliminary evidence for its effects, but scientific validation is modest and inconclusive at best.
