Epimedium extract, also known as "Horny Goat Weed," is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it has a long history as a tonic for enhancing vitality, libido, and musculoskeletal strength. In traditional contexts, Epimedium is believed to "strengthen bones and muscles," and is often included in herbal formulas for people experiencing weakness, fatigue, or age-related decline in physical function. The herb's use for muscle support is thus rooted in centuries of empirical use, not modern clinical trials.
Scientifically, Epimedium contains compounds called icariin and other flavonoids, which have demonstrated some potential for promoting bone health and possibly influencing muscle mass in preliminary laboratory and animal studies. Some animal studies suggest icariin may promote muscle regeneration or counteract muscle atrophy, but these effects have not been robustly validated in human clinical trials.
