Mineral ascorbate refers to mineral salts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), such as sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate. There is some scientific basis for their use in supporting muscle health, but the evidence is limited and not robust. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with antioxidant properties and is important for collagen synthesis, crucial for connective tissues, tendons, and the extracellular matrix surrounding muscle fibers. Some studies suggest that vitamin C may help reduce muscle soreness after exercise (delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS) due to its role in reducing oxidative stress and supporting tissue repair. However, randomized controlled trials on vitamin C supplementation for muscle performance or hypertrophy are inconclusive, with most showing little to no direct benefit in muscle strength or growth in healthy adults.
Mineral ascorbates are often used over pure ascorbic acid because they are less acidic and gentler on the digestive tract, but their physiological action as vitamin C remains the same. While vitamin C deficiency can lead to muscle weakness (due to impaired collagen formation and possible anemia), supplementation above the recommended daily allowance does not appear to enhance muscle function in well-nourished individuals. Thus, mineral ascorbate may support muscle health indirectly by preventing deficiency, but there is limited evidence for performance enhancement or muscle building.
