Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, for various musculoskeletal complaints. Historically, nettle has been used to treat conditions like arthritis, muscle pain, and general aches through both oral consumption and topical application. Some traditional practices involve directly applying nettle leaves to the skin (urtication) to stimulate circulation and reduce pain. The rationale for its use centers on nettle’s reported anti-inflammatory properties as well as its rich content of minerals like calcium and magnesium, which are important for muscle function.

Scientific research into nettle’s effects on the muscles specifically is limited. Some studies have shown that nettle extracts can reduce inflammation and modulate pain pathways, which may indirectly benefit muscle health, particularly in the context of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
