Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Peptides, particularly those derived from protein hydrolysates (such as whey, casein, or collagen peptides), are widely used to support the muscle body system, especially in the context of muscle growth, repair, and recovery. Scientific evidence suggests that peptides can be efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body, providing essential amino acids necessary for muscle protein synthesis. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with protein hydrolysates containing bioactive peptides can enhance muscle mass and strength gains in both athletes and older adults, especially when combined with resistance training.

The rapid absorption of peptides compared to whole proteins may result in a faster and greater rise in plasma amino acid levels, which in turn stimulates muscle protein synthesis. Some specific bioactive peptides have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, further supporting muscle recovery after exercise-induced damage. However, while the bulk of evidence is strongest for peptides derived from dairy proteins, research on collagen peptides is also growing, showing some benefits for muscle recovery and possibly tendon and connective tissue health.

Overall, the use of peptides for muscle support is justified by a substantial body of peer-reviewed research, especially in the context of sports nutrition and elderly populations at risk of muscle loss (sarcopenia). The evidence is not absolute or universal for all peptide types, but the general support for muscle health is strong.
