Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rue (Ruta graveolens) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly within Mediterranean and European cultures. Historically, rue has been applied externally and taken internally for various ailments, including muscle pain, cramps, and rheumatism. Folk medicine texts from the Middle Ages and Renaissance often mention rue as a remedy for sore muscles, sprains, and to "strengthen the sinews." The plant contains several active compounds, such as rutin and various furanocoumarins, which have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, though these studies are limited and mostly in vitro or in animal models.

Despite this traditional background, there is minimal scientific evidence supporting rue’s efficacy in supporting the muscular system. Modern clinical trials are lacking, and most recommendations for its use in muscle health are based on historical practice rather than validated research. Moreover, rue can be toxic in high doses or when used improperly, causing photodermatitis and other side effects. In summary, while rue’s use for muscle support is justified by tradition, there is little direct scientific validation for its efficacy or safety in this context.
