Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Shellfish, particularly certain species like mussels, oysters, and shrimp, are notable for their rich nutrient content, which is relevant to muscle health and function. Scientifically, shellfish are excellent sources of high-quality protein, providing essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth. In addition, shellfish contain important micronutrients such as zinc, selenium, and vitamin B12, all of which play roles in muscle metabolism and energy production.

A significant aspect of scientific interest comes from the presence of omega-3 fatty acids (especially EPA and DHA) in shellfish. Research suggests that these fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and support recovery in athletes and active individuals. For example, studies have shown that supplementation with omega-3s from marine sources can decrease delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and improve muscle function following strenuous exercise.

Additionally, shellfish like green-lipped mussel have been studied for their potential to alleviate symptoms of joint pain and muscle stiffness in conditions such as osteoarthritis, likely due to their unique lipid profiles and anti-inflammatory action. While the evidence is not uniformly strong across all types of shellfish and all aspects of muscle health, the scientific literature does support the inclusion of shellfish as part of a balanced diet to aid in muscle maintenance and recovery, particularly due to their protein and omega-3 content.
