Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are bioactive lipid compounds derived from omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, including resolvins, protectins, and maresins. Their primary role in the body is to actively resolve inflammation and promote tissue repair. In the context of the muscular system, scientific studies—mainly in preclinical models and a few small human studies—have shown that SPMs can accelerate the resolution of muscle inflammation and may aid in muscle regeneration following injury or intense exercise.

Animal studies have demonstrated that SPMs reduce inflammatory cell infiltration in muscle tissue, decrease pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and facilitate a faster return to normal muscle function after injury. For example, research published in FASEB Journal (2015) and Nature (2007) supports the role of SPMs in promoting muscle tissue homeostasis and repairing damage. Early human trials and pilot studies suggest that SPM supplementation may reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and improve recovery in athletes, although these studies are limited in size and scope.

While the evidence is promising, large-scale, robust clinical trials in humans are still lacking. Most current support comes from animal research and preliminary human data. Thus, the use of SPMs to support the muscular system has a scientific foundation, but the evidence is moderate and not yet definitive.
