Urolithin A is a metabolite produced by gut microflora from dietary ellagitannins found in foods such as pomegranates, berries, and nuts. Its use to support the muscular system is primarily based on recent scientific research rather than traditional usage. Preclinical studies have shown that Urolithin A can induce mitophagy, a process that removes dysfunctional mitochondria from cells, thereby improving mitochondrial health and function. Improved mitochondrial function is associated with enhanced muscle endurance and strength, particularly in aging populations.

Several animal studies have demonstrated that supplementation with Urolithin A leads to increased muscle function and endurance. Human clinical trials, though limited, have also provided promising results. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Nature Metabolism (2022) reported that older adults supplemented with Urolithin A for four months showed improved muscle endurance and mitochondrial biomarkers compared to placebo. However, while these findings are encouraging, the number of high-quality, large-scale human studies remains limited, and long-term effects are still being investigated.

Overall, the scientific evidence for Urolithin A’s role in supporting muscle health is emerging and moderately strong, but not yet definitive. Its mechanism of action is plausible and supported by initial human studies, justifying its use for muscle support based on current scientific knowledge.
