Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin E (tocopherol not specified)
For the body system: Muscles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin E, a group of fat-soluble compounds with antioxidant properties, has been investigated for its role in supporting muscle health. Scientific interest stems from its function in protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage, which is particularly relevant to muscle cells that generate reactive oxygen species during contraction and exercise. Animal studies and some human trials have suggested that vitamin E deficiency can lead to skeletal muscle weakness and even structural abnormalities such as muscle fiber degeneration (myopathy). In rare cases, severe deficiency in humans—such as in genetic disorders affecting vitamin E absorption—can result in neuromuscular problems, including muscle weakness.
However, evidence for the benefit of supplemental vitamin E in healthy individuals or athletes to enhance muscle strength, performance, or recovery is weak. Most clinical studies have not demonstrated significant improvements in muscle mass, strength, or recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage with vitamin E supplementation. The use of vitamin E for delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) or to reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress has yielded inconsistent results. Major health bodies do not recommend vitamin E supplementation specifically for muscle health in the general population. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale based on deficiency states and its antioxidant function, robust evidence supporting its use for muscle support in well-nourished individuals is limited.
