Evidence supporting the use of: Argan nut oil
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Argan nut oil, derived from the kernels of the Argan tree native to Morocco, has a long history of traditional use for cosmetic purposes, including supporting nail health. In Moroccan culture, Argan oil has been applied to nails and cuticles to moisturize, strengthen, and improve their appearance. This traditional use is primarily based on the oil's rich content of vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants, which are believed to help nourish and protect keratin structures such as nails.
However, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific validation specifically for nail health is limited. Most available studies focus on the benefits of Argan oil for skin and hair, demonstrating its moisturizing and antioxidant properties. There are no robust clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy for strengthening nails or improving nail health. Some extrapolation from its effects on skin barrier function and moisture retention can be made, suggesting a plausible benefit, but direct evidence is lacking. Therefore, while Argan oil is traditionally used for nails and is considered safe for topical application, its efficacy for supporting the nail body system is not strongly supported by scientific research.
