Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Beef liver is considered a nutrient-dense food and its use to support nail health is primarily grounded in scientific evidence. Nails are composed largely of keratin, a protein whose synthesis depends on adequate intake of several vitamins and minerals. Beef liver is exceptionally rich in key nutrients associated with healthy nail growth, including biotin (vitamin B7), iron, vitamin A, and protein. Biotin is perhaps the most well-studied nutrient in relation to nail strength and thickness; deficiency can lead to brittle, weak nails, and supplementation has been shown to improve nail condition in some individuals. Beef liver provides a significant amount of biotin per serving. Additionally, iron deficiency is a known cause of spoon-shaped or brittle nails, and beef liver is one of the best dietary sources of heme iron, which is highly bioavailable. Vitamin A, also abundant in beef liver, is important for cell growth and differentiation, indirectly supporting nail health. While randomized controlled trials specifically investigating beef liver's effect on nail health are lacking, the evidence connecting its constituent nutrients to nail integrity is robust. Therefore, the use of beef liver for supporting nail health is scientifically justified based on its nutrient profile and the established role of these nutrients in nail physiology.
