Bovine liver is sometimes used in nutritional supplements aimed at supporting nail health. The scientific rationale lies in its rich nutrient profile. Bovine liver is an excellent source of bioavailable iron, protein, zinc, and B vitamins—including biotin (vitamin B7), all of which are important for the maintenance of healthy nails. Biotin deficiency, though rare, is associated with brittle nails, and supplementation can improve nail strength and thickness in deficient individuals. A systematic review published in Skin Appendage Disorders (2017) concluded that biotin supplementation may benefit individuals with brittle nail syndrome, although high-quality studies are limited.

Iron deficiency anemia has also been linked to koilonychia (spoon-shaped nails), and zinc supports keratin production, a key structural component of nails. Bovine liver’s nutrient density makes it a potent whole food source for these micronutrients. However, direct clinical trials testing bovine liver specifically for nail health are lacking, so the evidence supporting its use comes from the known roles of its nutrients in nail biology rather than from studies of the ingredient itself.

Overall, the use of bovine liver for nail support is scientifically plausible based on its nutrient content, but direct evidence is limited, warranting a moderate evidence rating.
