Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Molasses has been traditionally used as a remedy to support nail health, particularly in folk and natural medicine circles. The rationale behind this use is primarily due to its mineral content, especially iron, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements, which are essential for various body functions, including the maintenance of healthy nails. Blackstrap molasses, in particular, is often cited for its higher concentrations of these nutrients.

Historically, people have linked brittle or weak nails to deficiencies in minerals such as iron or calcium. As molasses is a relatively rich, plant-based source of such nutrients, it has been consumed as a supplement to purportedly improve nail strength and appearance. However, while there is historical precedent for this belief, scientific studies specifically examining the effect of molasses consumption on nail health are lacking.

Any improvements in nail health from consuming molasses would likely be indirect, via correcting an underlying nutrient deficiency (such as iron-deficiency anemia), rather than a direct effect of molasses itself. Therefore, while the traditional use of molasses for supporting nail health is documented, robust scientific validation is limited. The evidence is stronger for correcting iron deficiency overall, but not specifically for targeted nail benefits.
