Evidence supporting the use of: Protein (vegetable)
For the body system: Nails
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Vegetable protein is scientifically supported as an important nutrient for nail health. Nails are composed primarily of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. Adequate intake of dietary protein, including plant-based sources such as legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, is essential for keratin synthesis and healthy nail growth. Several studies have shown that protein deficiency can lead to brittle, weak, or slow-growing nails. While most research does not specifically isolate vegetable protein from animal protein in relation to nail health, plant-based proteins are recognized as effective contributors to overall protein intake, provided that a variety of sources are consumed to ensure all essential amino acids are available.
A review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology highlights that poor nail health is often linked to malnutrition, particularly protein deficiency. Additionally, guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology and other health organizations routinely recommends adequate dietary protein for optimal nail structure and strength. While there is less research specifically on isolated vegetable protein supplements and nail health, the general role of protein—including from plant sources—is well established. Therefore, the use of vegetable protein to support the nails is scientifically validated, though the strength of evidence is somewhat indirect and based on the known biological role of protein in keratin production.
