Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Amaranthus tricolor, commonly known as Joseph’s coat or Chinese spinach, has a history of use in traditional medicine across Asia and Africa. In several ethnobotanical surveys, leaves and other parts of the Amaranthus genus have been used as food and occasionally as remedies for digestive issues, including nausea and vomiting. However, the references to its use specifically for nausea and vomiting are sparse and largely anecdotal. Traditional systems such as Ayurveda and Chinese folk medicine sometimes incorporate Amaranthus species in formulations intended to calm the stomach or treat various digestive complaints, but these uses are typically not well-defined nor extensively documented for Amaranthus tricolor in particular.

There is currently a lack of robust scientific studies—such as clinical trials or in vivo research—directly demonstrating antiemetic (anti-nausea) effects of Amaranthus tricolor. Most available literature focuses on its nutritional value, antioxidant properties, or general health benefits, rather than specific gastrointestinal therapeutic effects. Thus, while its use for nausea and vomiting can be traced to some traditional practices, the evidence is weak and not supported by rigorous scientific validation.
