Amomum, particularly Amomum villosum and Amomum kravanh, is a traditional medicinal herb widely used in Chinese and other Asian medical systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Amomum (known as Sha Ren) is prescribed to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort, including symptoms like nausea and vomiting. This use is documented in classic materia medica such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and is often found in herbal formulas for digestive issues. The herb is believed to "transform dampness," "promote movement of Qi," and "warm the middle," which in TCM theory helps resolve symptoms like nausea. Modern scientific validation is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that Amomum extracts may have gastroprotective effects and can influence gastrointestinal motility, but few high-quality clinical trials have been conducted to directly support its efficacy for nausea and vomiting in humans. Most published studies are either in vitro, in animals, or focus on broader digestive benefits. Thus, while there is a strong basis in traditional use and some preliminary scientific interest, rigorous clinical evidence remains insufficient.
