Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica archangelica (commonly known as garden angelica) has a longstanding history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, where it has been employed to address digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. Historical texts from the Middle Ages and onward document its use as a carminative and stomachic herb, believed to soothe the gastrointestinal tract, stimulate appetite, and relieve dyspeptic symptoms. The roots and seeds contain essential oils and bitter compounds (such as angelicin and various terpenes) thought to promote digestive secretions and reduce discomfort.

However, scientific validation of its efficacy for nausea and vomiting is limited. Most available evidence consists of traditional herbal monographs and anecdotal reports rather than controlled clinical trials. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Angelica species may have spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory actions, which could theoretically benefit digestive symptoms, but specific data on A. archangelica for nausea or vomiting in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use for this purpose is well-rooted in tradition, scientific substantiation remains minimal, and the evidence rating is low.
