Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angostura bitters have a long-standing traditional use as a remedy for digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. Originating in the 19th century, Angostura bitters were developed by Dr. Johann Siegert, reportedly as a medicinal tonic to aid the digestive issues of soldiers. Over time, the use of bitters—Angostura being among the most famous—became popular in various cultures as a "stomachic" or digestive aid, often added to soda water or taken as drops to alleviate symptoms such as nausea, queasiness, and mild digestive discomfort. The exact herbal formulation is proprietary, but it is known to include gentian root, which has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine for stimulating appetite and supporting digestion. However, there is limited scientific validation specifically for Angostura bitters in the treatment of nausea and vomiting. While some of the herbal ingredients, such as gentian, may have mild pro-digestive effects, controlled clinical trials are lacking. Most evidence remains anecdotal or rooted in traditional practice rather than rigorous science. As such, Angostura bitters are still sometimes used today for mild digestive complaints, but their efficacy for nausea and vomiting is not established by modern clinical research.
