Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The Asoka Tree (Saraca asoca) has a longstanding place in traditional Indian medicine, especially within Ayurveda and Unani systems, where it is primarily valued for its benefits in treating gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and other uterine conditions. Its bark, flowers, and seeds have been used in traditional formulations. While the Asoka Tree is not primarily known in the Ayurvedic texts for treating nausea and vomiting, some sources mention its use in multi-herbal preparations targeting digestive complaints, where it may play a supportive or adjunctive role. However, this is not the main or most common indication for Asoka in classical texts, and references are sparse compared to its gynecological use.

From a scientific perspective, there is very limited research directly evaluating the antiemetic (anti-nausea or anti-vomiting) effects of Asoka Tree extracts. Most published studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and uterotonic activities. As such, the support for using Asoka Tree specifically for nausea and vomiting is based almost entirely on traditional practices, and even within that context, it is a minor and poorly documented use.

In summary, the use of Asoka Tree for nausea and vomiting is justified, if at all, by tradition, with very weak supporting evidence and no robust clinical or pharmacological validation at present.
