Evidence supporting the use of: Cambodium Cardamom
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cambodian Cardamom (Amomum kravanh), closely related to black cardamom and similar species, has a long history of use in traditional Southeast Asian and Chinese medicine. The dried fruit or seeds have been used for digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cardamom species such as Amomum kravanh and Amomum villosum are known as "Sha Ren" and are included in various herbal formulations intended to harmonize the stomach, reduce nausea, and stop vomiting, especially those associated with dampness or cold in the digestive tract. Ethnobotanical texts record its use for similar digestive complaints among indigenous Cambodian populations and in Ayurveda, where related cardamom species are used for similar purposes. However, modern scientific evidence specifically supporting the antiemetic effects of Cambodian cardamom is limited. Most research on anti-nausea effects has focused on green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), with some small studies suggesting mild benefits for postoperative nausea or chemotherapy-induced nausea. There is a lack of clinical trials or systematic reviews specifically investigating Amomum kravanh for nausea and vomiting. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific validation for this application is currently minimal. The evidence rating reflects strong traditional but weak scientific support.
