Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ceylon Spinach (Basella alba), also known as Malabar spinach, is used in various traditional medicine systems across Asia and Africa. Ethnobotanical records indicate that it has been employed in folk remedies for a range of conditions, including digestive disturbances such as nausea and vomiting. In traditional Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian practices, preparations of Ceylon Spinach leaves or stems are sometimes given to alleviate mild gastrointestinal complaints. However, the historical evidence for its use specifically for nausea and vomiting is sparse and mostly anecdotal, typically passed down in oral traditions or mentioned briefly in local herbal compendia.

Scientific validation for the antiemetic (anti-nausea and anti-vomiting) effects of Ceylon Spinach is currently lacking. A search of the biomedical literature reveals no robust clinical trials or preclinical studies that directly evaluate its efficacy for these symptoms. While Basella alba contains various phytonutrients, mucilage, and antioxidants, none have been conclusively shown to impact the physiological processes underlying nausea or vomiting. Thus, while there is minor traditional precedent for its use in this context, the evidence is weak, and its effectiveness remains unproven by modern scientific standards.
