Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has a long history of traditional use as a remedy for nausea and vomiting. In various folk and herbal medicine systems, including those of Europe and the Middle East, chamomile tea has been used to soothe digestive discomfort, calm the stomach, and alleviate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and indigestion. The presumed mechanisms are related to its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and mild sedative effects, largely attributed to its flavonoids, terpenoids, and essential oils. However, while there are a few small clinical studies and animal experiments suggesting chamomile extracts may relax the gastrointestinal tract and reduce spasms, robust scientific evidence specifically supporting its efficacy in treating nausea and vomiting in humans is limited. Most modern clinical research on chamomile focuses on its use for anxiety, sleep, and general gastrointestinal complaints rather than for nausea and vomiting specifically. Consequently, chamomile's use for nausea and vomiting is justified mainly by its traditional reputation, with only modest supporting data from scientific studies. Large, high-quality clinical trials are lacking, so the evidence level remains low to moderate (rated 2/5).
