Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Amomum (commonly known as Amomum villosum or Sha Ren) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to address digestive complaints, including nausea and vomiting. The use of Amomum dates back centuries in classical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and is a staple in many traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations for conditions associated with "dampness" and "Qi stagnation" in the digestive tract. It is often prescribed to "harmonize the stomach," "move Qi," and "stop vomiting," especially in cases of morning sickness, motion sickness, or gastrointestinal upset from improper diet.

Modern biomedical research on Amomum's antiemetic effects is limited. Some preclinical studies have identified essential oils and volatile constituents in Amomum species with possible spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory properties, which could underlie its traditional use. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and scientific validation remains insufficient. Thus, while there is a strong historical basis for its use against nausea and vomiting in the context of TCM, high-quality scientific evidence to support these effects is minimal, justifying a rating of 2 on the evidence scale.
