Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cinquefoil (Potentilla spp.) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and Asian folk practices. Its use for gastrointestinal complaints, including nausea and vomiting, is documented mainly in ethnobotanical literature and older herbal texts. Herbalists have used preparations made from the aerial parts or roots to address a range of digestive ailments, attributing these effects to the plant’s astringent properties due to its tannin content. However, the mention of Cinquefoil specifically for nausea and vomiting is relatively sparse compared to its use for diarrhea, oral inflammation, or as a mild tonic.

There is very limited scientific research evaluating Cinquefoil for nausea or vomiting. No modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly support its efficacy for these symptoms. Most references to its use for nausea and vomiting are anecdotal or based on secondary sources referring to traditional practices. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent, the evidence base is weak and largely historical, with a lack of robust or controlled studies to validate its efficacy for these indications.
