Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Clerodendrum trichotomum, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. Ethnobotanical records from China and Japan indicate that various parts of the plant (such as the leaves, roots, and flowers) have been employed in folk remedies to address symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, as well as other ailments like headaches and hypertension. However, the evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal, derived from traditional practices rather than scientific studies. To date, there is very limited scientific research directly investigating the efficacy of C. trichotomum for nausea and vomiting. Most available studies focus on other pharmacological properties like anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Consequently, while its use for nausea and vomiting is justified by tradition, there is a lack of rigorous clinical or preclinical data supporting its effectiveness for these particular symptoms. Therefore, the strength of evidence is low and based on historical rather than scientific grounds.
