Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Evodia rutaecarpa (commonly known as Evodia or Wu Zhu Yu) is a traditional medicinal herb used in Chinese medicine. Its use for nausea and vomiting is primarily based on traditional practices, not on robust scientific evidence. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Evodia is often prescribed to 'warm the middle' and alleviate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, especially when these symptoms are attributed to 'cold' in the stomach. Classical TCM texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing, document its use for digestive complaints. However, modern scientific studies on Evodia’s efficacy specifically for nausea and vomiting are minimal and of low quality. Most available research focuses on its alkaloid constituents (such as evodiamine and rutaecarpine) and their potential pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective properties, but controlled clinical trials for its antiemetic effects are lacking. Thus, while Evodia is commonly used in traditional settings to address nausea and vomiting, this application is not supported by substantial modern scientific validation.
