Evidence supporting the use of: Houttynia
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Houttuynia cordata, also known as fish mint or "yu xing cao" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for a variety of ailments, including infections, inflammation, and as a general detoxifying agent. However, its traditional applications for nausea and vomiting are limited and not central to its historical use. Some traditional herbal formulas may include Houttuynia as a minor component in broader prescriptions aimed at clearing "heat" or toxins, which may indirectly address nausea if it is attributed to such causes in TCM theory. Nevertheless, there is very little direct mention in classical TCM texts or pharmacopoeias of Houttuynia being used specifically or primarily to manage nausea and vomiting.
From a scientific standpoint, there is no substantial research or clinical evidence supporting Houttuynia cordata's efficacy in treating nausea or vomiting. Most modern studies on Houttuynia focus on its antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, and not on gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea. Therefore, while there may be isolated anecdotal or secondary uses in traditional practice, the evidence is weak (rated 1), and its use for nausea and vomiting cannot be considered well-supported by either robust tradition or scientific validation.
