Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Jalapa commonly refers to the dried tuberous root of Ipomoea purga, a plant native to Mexico and Central America. Historically, Jalapa has been used primarily as a strong purgative (laxative) in traditional herbal medicine, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. While there is extensive documentation of its use as a cathartic, there is limited evidence to suggest it was traditionally used specifically to treat or support nausea and vomiting. In fact, the action of Jalapa as a purgative could itself induce gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea and vomiting, as a side effect of its strong laxative properties. There are no well-documented scientific studies or clinical trials validating its efficacy for the treatment of nausea and vomiting. Most references to Jalapa in historical pharmacopeias focus on its use to relieve constipation or as part of "detoxifying" regimens, not for antiemetic purposes. Therefore, any use of Jalapa for nausea and vomiting is based more on isolated traditional practices or incidental effects rather than on robust historical or scientific evidence.
