Rating (out of 5): 2

Japanese Apricot (Prunus mume), known as "ume" in Japan, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cultures. The fruit, especially in its pickled form (umeboshi), is commonly used as a folk remedy for digestive issues, including nausea and vomiting. Historical texts and traditional medical practices recommend umeboshi as a dietary aid to alleviate morning sickness, motion sickness, and indigestion. The presumed mechanisms are its acidic content, which is thought to stimulate saliva and gastric secretions, and its mild antimicrobial properties, which may help maintain gut health.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Japanese Apricot for nausea and vomiting is limited. Few clinical trials have rigorously tested this use. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential benefits in gastrointestinal function, but these do not directly address nausea or vomiting in humans. Most references to its antiemetic effects are anecdotal or derived from traditional medicine literature rather than controlled clinical research. As such, while Japanese Apricot is widely used traditionally for these symptoms in East Asia, robust scientific validation is lacking.
