Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Natsudaidai (Citrus natsudaidai), also known as Japanese summer orange, is traditionally used in some East Asian folk medicine practices. There are anecdotal and historical records suggesting its use for alleviating digestive discomfort, including nausea and vomiting, particularly in the form of its peel or essential oil. However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific research or clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy specifically for nausea and vomiting. Most references to its use are based on traditional herbal medicine compendia and not on controlled studies. The rationale in traditional use may relate to the aromatic and bitter compounds in its peel, which are thought in some herbal traditions to stimulate digestion or calm the stomach, similar to other citrus peels used in Kampo and Chinese medicine. Nevertheless, no authoritative pharmacological or clinical evidence substantiates these claims for Natsudaidai specifically. Therefore, while it is recognized in traditional contexts, its use for nausea and vomiting is not backed by strong evidence.
