For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) has been traditionally used for its pleasant aroma and calming effects, but there is also emerging scientific interest in its potential to alleviate nausea and vomiting. Recent clinical studies have explored the use of inhaled orange essential oil in various settings, including postoperative recovery and pregnancy-related nausea. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2013 in the journal Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal found that inhalation of orange essential oil significantly reduced nausea severity among patients undergoing surgery compared to placebo. Another study in 2018 published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine suggested moderate benefit for pregnant women experiencing mild nausea and vomiting after inhaling orange oil. The proposed mechanisms involve the oil's interaction with the olfactory system, which may modulate signals in the brain responsible for nausea perception, as well as possible anxiolytic effects that contribute to the reduction of nausea symptoms. However, while these studies are promising, the overall body of evidence remains limited, with small sample sizes and variability in study designs. Larger, well-controlled trials are needed to establish efficacy and safety more definitively. Thus, while some scientific validation exists, the current level of support is moderate at best.
